DEPICTING celebration of victory, hope, and resilience, the top three winning entries among those who submitted, bagged cash and trophies in this year’s Hulagway sa Davao 2021: #Kadayawan Reimagined Digital Art Contest.

According to the City Information Office (CIO), Rembert Vergara Jr. in his winning artwork “Golden Time of 2021” reimagined the roars of the champions, colorful bounties of harvest, lively music of different local bands, exciting activities and destinations, and beautiful smiling faces of Davaoeños that could have been without the health crisis.

The second place is “Kadayawan” by Francquiel Cinto which is an amalgamation and an abstract of the Kadayawan sa Davao throughout his childhood.

“I could still vividly remember the floats, dancers, drummers, the crowd, the vendors, reporters, and the tourists around the streets. It is a nostalgic feeling and I want to depict that in my artwork through the use of color tones and effects. I drew this on my android phone using my fingers and by that, I want to deliver a message that even through hardships and obstacles we should still persevere and fight head-on,” Cinto said.

Two entries bagged the Mayor’s Choice and consolation prize. These are “Bring Back” by Marie Antionette Capala and “Reimagining Kadayawan” by Johann Alcain. Both entries depict bustling city streets with people taking selfies amidst the colorful performances during the Indak-indak sa Kadayawan.

Chief city information officer Jefry Tupas said that what makes this year’s Hulagway sa Kadayawan 2021 unique is the shift of the platform from the regular photography contest to digital art. And it did not disappoint.

“The contest shifted from the usual competition that seeks photographs that best show the spirit of Kadayawan and how Dabawenyos celebrate it. This year, we sought to find out how Dabawenyos imagine Kadayawan without the pandemic. These artworks not only show creativity, but also inspiration, hope, resilience, and faith for better days to come,” Tupas said.
